Alpha Wolves
Generally, the alpha rank is a life position, and not up for change.
(That is not to say, a wolf cannot scheme to kill an alpha wolf and initiate Matra or Patrareign)
An alpha wolf must die or become physically unable to rule, and relinquish his position to his best fit male off spring, or another appointed wolf and his mate. If, in the event of his death or inability to appoint that wolf and his mate, the alpha's mate mate may do so. He himself, or his mate can ask a council to appoint the new ruling pair if unable to come to a conclusion.
In the event of the female Alpha's death an alpha male must relinquish the position to his best fit male of spring, or another appointed wolf and his mate. He may ask a council to appoint the new ruling pair if he is unable to come to a conclusion.
The time between a male alpha's death and the appointing of a new alpha pair is called Matrareign. The female of the Alpha pair takes the head of the pack. If the female does not see a new pair fit to rank alpha, Matrareign continues until a pair proves themselves worthy and capable.
An male Alpha may continue to rule in the event of his mate's death. This period is called Patrareign, and continues until he takes another mate (Rare!) or appoints a new alpha pair. If the male does not see a new pair fit to rank alpha, Patrareign continues.
Patrareign and Matrareign are usually times of emotional pack turmoil.
Pack members, during matra & patrareign may "petition" to declare the single alpha ruler unfit to rule and or appoint a new alpha pair. This is only occasional. To declare a wolf unfit, the accuser must have the majority of the pack's blessing. To give blessing, wolves offer the accuser a round rock, fished from the bottom of a flowing body of water. When the blessing of more than half of the pack is received, a council is held to decide the -Pending- Alpha wolf. The -Original- Alpha must resign or fight the council appointed -Pending- Alpha to keep their position.
Beta Wolves
If mated beta pair is in rank, and the male becomes unable to rule, he must appoint a new beta male. He and his mate then lower in rank.
If the male dies, a council appointed pair comes into beta rule and his surviving mate lowers in rank.
If the male beta is unmated, or his mate dies he may choose a female to rule as his "mate", though, there is no physical relation ship between them. She is called a Phantom Red. PR's may have lower ranking mates and continue to hold Beta position themselves.
If the male takes a true mate, he may move her up to his rank, causing the PR to fall, or he may take the ranking of his mate. In this case, the PR and her mate become the true Beta pair. If the PR is unmated, the beta male -must- bring his mate into beta ranking.
On occasion, the beta male takes the RP as his true mate, and she becomes the true beta female.
